Community climate protection concepts for communities, cities and shires

The German federal government has formulated ambitious goals for climate protection and energy policy for the coming years: the energy and climate program aims for a reduction of CO2 emissions by 40% by 2020 through a more efficient use of energy and an accelerated development of regenerative energy sources.

BGI Consulting develops community climate protection concepts based on a shared and conversational process with an intensive involvement of the relevant agents. For the Berlin commune of Lichtenberg  this concept is already successfully been used and for the commune of Steglitz-Zehlendorf it will be implemented.

The following aspects are at the centre of community climate protection concepts by Borchert GeoInfo:

  • Survey of current energy consumption, taking into account different sectors (energy footprint).
  • CO2 footprint for the body politic.
  • Detection of potentials for savings.
  • Determination of CO2 reduction aims for 2015/2020/2025.
  • Development of a concept with strategies and single measures for reaching the savings potentials.
  • Implementation planning for the different sectors of the climate protection concept.

The plausibility, comparability and continuation of community energy and CO2 footprints require a comprehensible and consistent method of assessing the footprint. We therefore use Eco2Region – a consistent CO2 footprint software developed by the European Climate Alliance (registered society) and the European Energy Award ® (eea®).

As an option, BGI offers an interactive solar inventory website as a module of the climate protection concept which can be effective as good publicity and which provides a wide ranging visualisation of roof suitability for solar collectors.

Borchert GeoInfo is a sponsor of the project  “Making renewable energies visible” and project partner in the project  „Climate protection in schools and educational institutions“.

The increasing scarcity of fossil energies and the threat of the effects of climate change will continue to generate a strong political and economic dynamic.

With the 2008 climate protection initiative, the Federal German Ministry for the Environment, Protection of Nature and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports concepts and technologies for reducing harmful emissions. Since 2008, this initiative has been providing substantial subsidies for the development and implementation of community climate protection concepts to communities, cities and shires.
